Timing
When an automotive timing belt is changed, treatment have to be taken to make sure that the valve and piston movements are appropriately synchronized. Failure to synchronize appropriately can guide to problems with valve timing, and this in turn, in extremes, can cause collision between valves and pistons in interference engines. This is not a difficulty unique to timing belts considering that the identical problem exists with all other cam/crank timing strategies such as gears or chains. To aid ease a timing belt from being incorrectly put in, the timing belt has painted marks on the area of the belt that line up with markings on the camshaft gears and crankshaft equipment so that the belt is completely aligned and effectively positioned.
